AUSTIN SEVEN SUSPENSION

A DA7C TECHNICAL FORUM REPORT

By Phil Whitter

Foreword statement:  Suspension, steering and brakes are all interconnected and one cannot operate efficiently without the others being in good condition.

(For advanced suspension modifications click here)

Front Spring

Check for loose U bolts

Spring mounting can affect castor angle

Wrong castor angle can affect steering

Lubricating springs:

Lubricate springs with spray grease

Brush oil on when spring leaves open (weight off springs)

Clean thoroughly before oiling

Protect springs with Denso grease tape or Wefco leather gaiters

Someone uses big heatshrink!!

If you lubricate springs can it affect spring rate?

Keep shackles lubricated

Lot of worn shackles—Tony Betts does shackle recon kit and Seven Workshop do new shackles

Watch radiator drain tube does not discharge onto spring

New springs from Ian Dunford and Fenix at Tiverton

Front Shock Absorber

Make sure centre bush is good

Modern star washers can be weak

Old wood discs swell in wet

Have seen grease used on old wood discs

Do not over-tighten – just enough to damp rebound

Install axle right way round with tapered pin eye to the front!!

Modifications to front shock absorber :

1) Take link off one side, cut in half, fettle and bolt back on

2) Fit a twin-mounting plate kit (see A7CA mag.)

Rear Springs

For removal use Porta Power or soak overnight with a lot of persuasion

Refit with spring packing if necessary (on the bottom?)

Beware spring camber settings in A7 Companion are wrong—see the club’s website for correct settings.

If spring bushes are loose, close eye or make new bushes

Use washers to stop side play on spring pins

Spring pins difficult to remove on early cars—use a puller made by Willie McKenzie

Don’t forget to remove cotters first.

Cotters push out to the front (viewed from back nut facing you)

Rear Shock Absorbers

Watch out for cracked chassis flange

Make sure brass discs are in place

Check rubber in links for play or perishing

Nobby spring assisters (Willie does them) need big fixing plate in floor

Nobby good on SWB cars

Watch out for different lengths on Ruby alloy links.

Tyre Pressures

Several options are used by members:

22 all round

22 F 24R

22F 26R

Take your pick which works best for you!
